Your solar battery questions answered
A solar battery stores the extra energy your panels generate during the day. Your home can use this stored power when the sun isn't shining. This means you rely less on the grid and could save more on your bills. Overall, it helps you make the most of your solar investment.
The cost varies depending on the size and capacity. In the UK, prices range from £1,000 to £12,000, including installation. Think of it as a long-term investment. The potential savings on your energy bills and other added benefits can make it worthwhile.
Solar batteries usually last 5 to 15 years. This depends on the type of battery, how often you use it, and how well it's maintained. Many systems are future-proof, so you can replace the battery when it's worn out without changing the rest of your setup. For your peace of mind, the batteries we install come with a warranty of up to 12 years, depending on the one you choose.
Most are, but you'll need to check if your setup is compatible or if you need extra equipment, like a battery inverter, added alongside your existing inverter. Our solar experts can talk you through this when they survey your home.
You can add more batteries to increase storage. This is useful if you have a larger solar system or higher energy needs at home. More batteries mean more flexibility and more stored energy for later use, making your home more self-sufficient.
When your batteries are full, any extra energy usually goes back to the grid. If OVO installed your solar and battery system and supplies your energy, and you've signed up for our SEG rate, we'll pay you 20p per kWh for the energy you export.
Important information
1 These annual energy savings are dependent on your property type and location, roof type, slope and size. If your roof is shaded or isn't south facing, figures are likely to be lower. We based the figure on the following: a) You have 12 (440W) solar panels and a 9.5 kWh battery installed b) You’re home all day with an annual electricity consumption of 2,700 kWh (Ofgem). You currently pay our Standard Variable Rate of 24.50p (correct at 1 October 2024) and will use 39% of what you generate c) You sign up for our exclusive SEG rate (20p kWh) for customers who purchase solar and a battery from us, and you sell back the remaining 61% of energy generated. You’ll get a more accurate savings estimation once we’ve surveyed your property.
2 If you buy solar panels and a battery from us, and OVO supply your energy, you'll be eligible for our anytime SEG rate of 20p per kWh rate (correct at 1 June 2024). You'll need to sign up to our SEG tariff to get this rate. This SEG rate is exclusive to customers who get solar panels and battery from OVO. You’ll also need a smart meter.
3 Our smart tech aims to charge your battery when the grid has more renewable energy in it, at periods of lower demand. Meaning it’s less likely your battery will be charged by energy from fossil fuels.
4 Up to 58% saving based on Battery Boost customer charging their battery at the Battery Boost rate of 10p per kWh versus charging the battery at our current standard standard variable electricity rate of 24.50p which is 58.34% higher. If you override the controls and charge the battery from the grid, you'll be charged your standard electricity unit rate.
