Frequently asked questions
Smart charging is when you charge your EV at home. The smart bit comes from our intelligent tech making sure your vehicle is charged when the grid is greenest, within the time you need it charged by. You set this time through the OVO Charge app.
Smart charging unlocks cheaper charging when signing up to a monthly plan or choosing pay as you with a rate of 14p per kWh.5 It helps move the UK energy system towards a smarter, greener way of using energy. If more people use energy when the grid is greener, together we can rely less on fossil fuels to keep power flowing at peak times.
On 4 November, we’re introducing flexible monthly plans with home and public charging in one fixed payment. 6 Pick a standard or premium plan to lock in your miles and unlock loads of extra perks. Or choose pay as you go, which will replace the current Charge Anytime rate.
The pay as you go rate will be increasing from 7p per kWh to 14p per kWh on the 4 November.
If you’re a Volvo customer who smart charges in the Volvo Cars app, or you’re a customer who’s taken up one of our Volkswagen Group Free Miles Offers, you might still be able to access our exclusive partnership pay as you go rate of 7p per kWh. More information can be found in our FAQs.
If you’re switching to OVO and would like to add Charge Anytime to your plan, you’ll need to wait until your energy supply and online account is fully set up. This could take up to 4 to 6 weeks.
Once you’re all set up, head over to the Offers section in your online account and select Charge Anytime.
At the end of the month, we work out how much energy you've used to smart charge your EV. We'll use this info to credit your account in the first week of the following month.
For example if you sign up to Charge Anytime pay as you with a rate of 14p per kWh:
The Charge Anytime rate is 7p a kWh. And let's say your standard electricity rate is 26p a kWh.
We’ll credit you 19p for each kWh you’ve used to smart charge your EV. To make your smart charging rate 7p.
This means if you use 100 kWh of energy smart charging your EV, you’ll get £19 in credit back on your bill.
For example if you sign up to a Charge Anytime premium monthly plan with a monthly cost of £37.50:
As well as receiving credit you’ll be billed separately the premium monthly plan fee which is £37.50. This will cover your home charging miles as well as public charging voucher and any other perks included in the plan.
Yes, you can get Charge Anytime if you have a solar compatible charger. You’ll need to make sure you connect using your charger instead of your EV if that is also compatible.
We’ve introduced a fair usage policy meaning the maximum Charge Anytime pay as you go credit you can receive on your bill is £100 per month. This works out as about 810 kWh of smart charging per month 7 and will vary slightly depending on home tariff rate and the current Charge Anytime rate.
Most customers will not smart charge above this amount of energy per month. 810 kWh is roughly the equivalent of driving 3,241 miles a month.8 There are no restrictions on the total charging consumption however if you exceed the maximum Charge Anytime pay as you co credit of £100 any consumption above the cap will be billed at your home tariff rate.

A fixed monthly payment for all your EV charging, when you sign up to your chosen monthly plan and charge up to the home mileage cap associated with that plan. Any mileage up to the cap will be credited for at your home tariff rate. Mileage over the cap you will not be credited for, effectively meaning you'll be charged at your home tariff rate for mileage above your plan cap. Your home tariff rate will also apply to urgent charging. Public charging is based on using up to the annual voucher amount for public charging associated with your monthly plan, for example £120 if you were to sign up to the Premium monthly plan.
Our smart tech aims to charge your car when the grid has more renewable energy in it, within the time you’ve set. Meaning it’s less likely your EV will be charged by energy from fossil fuels. The cost of smart charging is cheaper compared to charging your vehicle at your home tariff rate. For example, our Charge Anytime pay as you go rate is 14p per kWh compared to a standard variable tariff rate of 26.34p per kWh.
Please note, if you have a BMW or MINI, in some cases you may lose your preconditioning schedule when you add Charge Anytime. We’re working with BMW and MINI to find a way to fix this.
