You’ll earn more credit with Battery Boost in winter
In winter months, your solar panels generate less electricity. So we’ll use more power from the grid to charge your battery. This means you’ll earn more Battery Boost credit – as long as you don’t override the battery charging controls.
In summer, your solar panels will do most of the work to charge your battery. You’ll earn less Battery Boost credit – but free sunshine power will keep your battery topped up.

Check if you’re eligible
To be eligible for Battery Boost, you need to have solar panels, a GivEnergy battery, and a smart meter installed by OVO. If you don’t have solar panels yet, you can book a free video survey with one of our solar experts.
If you’ve got solar panels and a battery that weren't installed by OVO, you can still register your interest. We’re working hard to unlock Battery Boost for everyone, and we’ll get in touch when your set-up is compatible.
Your Battery Boost questions, answered
We’ll charge your battery up when there’s less demand on the grid, meaning there’s more renewable power.
The electricity you use will first be charged at your normal OVO rates. At the end of each month, we’ll work out how much energy we’ve used to power your battery. We’ll then add the right amount of credit to your energy account in the first 7working days of the next month. The cost of powering your battery will reflect the 10p per kWh Battery Boost rate.
It’ll show on your OVO bill as “Battery Boost Credit”. We add credit for Battery Boost to your account in the first 7 working days of each month.
Yes, if you’re on Battery Boost you’ll still be able to export electricity generated by your solar panels. You’ll keep your normal SEG rate.
No, signing up to Battery Boost won’t affect any Direct Debit that you’ve already set up for your energy account.
Right now, you won’t be able to opt in for Charge Anytime and Battery Boost at the same time. We’re working hard to let our customers benefit from both add-ons.
Here’s an example. Let’s say your standard electricity rate is 28p per kWh. The Battery Boost rate is 10p per kWh. We’ll credit you 18p (the difference between the rates) for each kWh you’ve used to top up your battery. That means, if you’ve used 300kWh to charge your battery, you’ll get £54 in credit back in your energy account. You can find out more about how we calculate your credit in our terms.
Important information
1 You'll pay our Battery Boost rate of 10p per kWh for any electricity used to top up your battery – when we call on the battery to charge. If you override the controls and charge the battery from the grid, you'll be charged your standard electricity unit rate.
2 Up to 58% saving based on Battery Boost customer charging their battery at the Battery Boost rate of 10p per kWh versus charging the battery at our current standard standard variable electricity rate of 24.50p which is 58.34% higher. If you override the controls and charge the battery from the grid, you'll be charged your standard electricity unit rate.
3 Our smart tech aims to charge your battery when the grid has more renewable energy in it, at periods of lower demand. Meaning it’s less likely your battery will be charged by energy from fossil fuels.
