Get rewarded when wind powers your community.
Join the Community Power Project for Lawrence Weston
We’re inviting OVO customers who live in Lawrence Weston to our Community Power Project trial. You’ll be rewarded with energy credit for using electricity on windy days when your local turbine is generating lots of power. The trial will run from April to August this year.
Do you have a BS11 postcode and a smart meter?
If you're eligible to join you'll get an invite by e-mail or post. If you don't get an invite you can call us on 0333 034 1575 to check and we'll send out a sign up form to get started.
How do the rewards work?
1. Weather check
You get a text to tell you when your wind turbine is expected to generate lots of clean, green electricity.
2. Get rewarded
Use your electricity as normal, or shift some of your everyday usage. It's up to you. We’ll add 15p energy credit to your account for every unit (kWh) used.
3. Congratulations
You’ve saved on your bills – and helped make the UK a little greener by using electricity when your turbine is supplying the most power to the grid.

Power from the people
We believe that together, we can make energy work for people and the planet.
By using locally generated renewable energy, you're helping to make that happen. And so is everyone in your community who made that choice. That’s how powerful you are.
Rewarding your efforts is our way of saying thanks. Your actions are changing the way we use energy. For the better.

Windy days FAQs

We’re really sorry but you can't join this time. If we run future projects like this, make sure you’ve opted in to get our marketing updates.
Yes, we'll use your smart meter data on windy days to work out how much electricity you've used. This is so we can work out the credit we’ll pay you.
If you’d like to know how we collect and use your smart meter data you can read more in our privacy policy.
If your smart meter stops working while you’re taking part in this project, we'll try and get it fixed. We’ll still send you energy credit for windy days based on an estimated consumption. Please see our terms and conditions for more on this.
We plan to start sending alerts on windy days from 2 April 2024. The project is due to last for 4 months, so it should finish on or around 2 August 2024.
We'll be running a pop up event on 5 March at the Lawrence Weston Youth Centre.
If you can't make it, visit our forum for more info.
Once the project has started, we'll be keeping an eye on the local weather.
We'll be forecasting when the wind will blow enough to generate plenty of electricity from the Lawrence Weston turbine.
When we know it'll be windy enough, we'll send you a text message at least a day before to the mobile number you gave us.
The message will confirm the date of the windy day.
On the windy day you can either use electricity as normal, use more, or use less. It's entirely up to you.
After the windy day has finished we'll collect data from your smart meter to work out how much electricity you used.
We'll use this to work out how much credit you're due.
We'll also use text messages to confirm the credit you've earned..
Credits are based on a minimum rate of 15p per unit (kWh) for the duration of the trial. This means that for every unit (kWh) of electricity that you use on a windy day you’ll receive 15p towards the cost of the electricity you've used that day.
You don’t have to use a full unit of electricity, we’ll reward you for part units too.
Each month the credit you receive will vary, depending on:
- The number of windy day Events that occur, and
- The amount of electricity you use on windy days
If your smart meter stops communicating with us, we’ll continue to credit you for windy days, using your estimated consumption.
We’ll credit you differently depending on whether you’re a Credit or Pay As You Go (PAYG) customer. These credits effectively reduce the cost of electricity.
For Credit customers:
- The electricity you use on a windy way is recorded by your smart meter.
- When the windy day finishes, we’ll collect data from your smart meter to tell us how much electricity you’ve used.
- We multiply the number of units (kWhs) of electricity you used on the windy day by our energy credit rate.
- We’ll pay the credit into your energy account within 14 days and you’ll see the credits on a subsequent bill.
For Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers:
- In advance of a windy day, we’ll add energy credit to your pre-pay smart meter based on your estimated consumption for the event.
- All the electricity you use on a windy day is recorded by your smart meter.
- When the windy day finishes, we’ll collect data from your smart meter to tell us how much electricity you have used.
- Every 2 weeks we’ll calculate exactly how much electricity you’ve used on windy days and if you’re due any additional energy credit, we’ll add this to the next windy day event. If we’ve paid you too much credit then we won’t reclaim it, it’s yours to keep.
There’s no cap to the energy credits that we'll pay.
On average we think customers will use about 10 units (kWh) of electricity on a normal day. This would mean an average customer would receive a credit of £1.50 for the day.
If you use more electricity than you normally would on a windy day this is entirely up to you. For each unit used you'll be rewarded an energy credit.
No.
No. But we definitely want to promote lower carbon and sustainable forms of energy, so we'd always encourage you to use less gas if you can.
Windy days are triggered by weather conditions. The windier it is, the more likely it is there’ll be one. But as this is a pilot project we’ll need to maintain a level of control over when they occur. This is important with a pilot to make sure things run smoothly.
Please use the OVO forum as a first port of call. If you can't use the forum, then you can call us on 0333 034 1575.
