If we need any more information, we'll be in touch.
No, you can export to the grid all the excess electricity that you generate and don’t use.
Yes, your SEG payments and your energy supply are separate. But you’ll get paid more for exporting your electricity if we also supply your energy. That’s because we have exclusive SEG tariffs for OVO energy customers.
Here’s how to switch your energy to OVO.
Here’s our best SEG rates and how to apply for a SEG tariff.
There are documents that we need to see when you apply for SEG. Take a look at our supporting documents guide to help find and upload the right documents. It also explains what you’ll need if you’re applying for a company. If you’re unable to send us the correct documents, your application may be delayed.
If you have questions, you can email us at [email protected], or call 0330 102 7421 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). We’ll do our best to help you with your application.
Yes, you can switch your SEG provider at any time. Contact your new provider to set up your contract and then let your old provider know, so they can prepare your final payment. Just be aware that if your SEG and energy tariff are linked, then your rate may be affected if you change SEG provider.
If we've installed your solar panels and you have energy with us, you may be eligible for our higher rate solar export tariff - SEG Install Exclusive. Once your panels are fully installed and final payment is received, we'll send an email with your sign up details.
If your solar installation is complete, you can also apply here.
If you’re not with OVO for your energy then you can still sign up for SEG. But you won’t be eligible for our SEG Install Exclusive tariff. See here for our full range of SEG tariffs.
Yes, you can sign up for any of our SEG tariffs if you have a battery. You may need to send us a detailed line diagram from your installer. It should clearly show the direction of energy going from your solar panels to the rest of the installation. For further details see our supporting documents guide.
If you need to update your details – like your bank information, or to add someone to the account – you can complete this form or call 0330 102 7421. We’re here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

How much you earn depends on a few things:
How much energy you generate
How much of that energy you don’t use, and export to the grid
Which SEG tariff you sign up to, and the tariff rate per kWh.
You can choose from 3 SEG tariffs:
SEG - 4p per kWh. Choose this SEG tariff if you can generate your own renewable energy at home, your installed capacity doesn't exceed 5MW and your electricity supply is with another provider.
SEG Beyond Exclusive - 12p per kWh. Choose this SEG tariff if OVO is your home energy supplier, you generate your own renewable energy, and your installed capacity doesn't exceed 30kW.
SEG Install Exclusive - up to 20p per kWh. Choose this SEG tariff if we installed your solar panels and/ or battery, OVO is your home electricity supplier and your installed capacity doesn't exceed 30kW
You can find out more about our SEG tariffs and how to apply on our SEG page.
If you're on our SEG tariff your SEG payments will be paid into your bank account.
If you’re on our SEG Beyond Exclusive or SEG Install Exclusive tariffs then you'll be paid directly into your energy account. The SEG payment will show as SEG on your statement and in the OVO app.
We make SEG payments every 3 months.
We take your readings automatically from your smart meter once a quarter - in March, June, September, and December. You’ll then be paid around 8 weeks after the end of each meter read month.
Still have questions? Back to top of page.
The readings we use for payments will be sent automatically from your smart meter 4 times a year – in March, June, September, and December. If for some reason they're not sent automatically, we’ll ask you to send a reading to us.
Usually, your payment readings will be sent automatically from your smart meter. If we ask you to send us a meter reading, this meter read guide will help you to take an export meter reading from your smart meter.
Let your supplier and us know as soon as possible, as it may affect your SEG payments. If you've had your meter changed, we also need to know, so that your payments are right. Read more about troubleshooting smart meter problems, and how to fix them.

The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) was a Government scheme launched in 2010, to encourage people to generate their own electricity at home. There are two FiT payments: one for the electricity generated and another for the electricity exported back to the grid. FiT closed to new applicants in 2019.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) was launched in 2020 to replace FiT. There are 3 main differences:
SEG is one payment for energy exported. While FIT is made up of 2 payments - one for energy exported and one for energy generated.
SEG payments are based on the actual amount of energy exported. While the FiT export payment is sometimes based on an estimate.
SEG rates are set by energy suppliers, while FiT tariff rates were set by the regulator, Ofgem.
Yes, you can switch your Feed-in Tariff (FiT) export payments to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and continue receiving FIT generation payments. Please complete our FiT Switching form. If you want to opt in and out of your FiT, bear in mind you can only do this once a year.
Yes, you can. But if you apply for one of our SEG tariffs, then you’ll need to stop your FiT export payments. OVO doesn’t have to be your energy supplier for you to apply for our SEG tariffs, but you can get a better SEG rate if we also supply your electricity.
If the installation you've inherited is linked to a Feed-in Tariff scheme with OVO, please complete our FiT inheritance form. We can then transfer the FiT account over to you.

Your SEG contract ends when you sell your home. Please give 28 days' notice, and send a closing reading. If the new owners want to get SEG payments, they’ll need to sign up for SEG directly.
First, you need to check if the previous owners have signed up for FiT. If the previous owners didn’t sign up for FiT, then you can apply for SEG payments – please choose a SEG tariff and sign up using the application form.
If they were registered, you’ll need to check who the FiT provider is. If OVO is the FiT provider, you’ll need to complete a Change of ownership form. Once the form is submitted, you’ll have three options for the installation:
Keep is registered with the same FiT scheme.
Move the export payment to SEG while keeping the generation payments with FiT.
